A Journey of Inspiration, Connection, and Discovery

Mikey Kieu, ASCLS Developing Professionals Forum Councilor-at-Large

Mikey KieuAttending the ASCLS, AGT & SAFMLS Joint Annual Meeting (JAM) for the first time was truly an exciting and enriching experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt an overwhelming sense of community and solidarity. Everyone there understood both the challenges and the incredible rewards that come with working in this profession, and that shared understanding created such a welcoming atmosphere.

On my very first day, I joined the ASCLS Ascending and Developing Professionals Forums, and right away, I met some of the friendliest people—Katie, Doryan, Alexandra, Emily, Erika, and so many more. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like part of the ASCLS family. That sense of inclusion was something I’ll never forget.

One of the most inspiring aspects of JAM was realizing how it expanded my vision of what’s possible for my future. I’ve always dreamed of working in Vermont, and attending JAM showed me that there are so many paths within this field—more than I ever imagined. With attendees from across the country, you never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities might come your way. I was especially moved by the long-time ASCLS members who generously shared their stories and wisdom. Hearing about the places they’ve worked and the paths they’ve taken truly opened new horizons for me.

Beyond the connections, JAM was an incredible learning experience. The conference showcases the latest advancements in technology and research within our field. I was fascinated by how eager researchers and companies were to share their innovations. Learning about cutting-edge developments helped me connect the dots between what I study in the classroom and the real-world applications in labs today.

Last year, for example, I attended a lecture on CRISPR technology being used to treat sickle cell disease. There were also mobile labs set up with representatives showcasing the newest testing equipment and happily answering all our questions. As a student, I’ve learned the foundational knowledge, but seeing how rapidly the field is evolving made me realize how important it is to stay current. Change is constant, and it’s up to us to keep learning and growing so we can continue to improve patient care. JAM helped me take that next step, and I know I’m not alone in feeling that way.

Another thing I’ve come to appreciate more deeply is how under-recognized the lab profession often is, despite how critical it is to patient care. That’s something ASCLS is actively working to change. One of the best parts about this organization is how many opportunities there are to get involved and make a difference. I’m currently serving as a councilor-at-large for the Developing Professionals Forum (DPF), and it’s been an absolute pleasure working alongside the amazing people in both the DPF and Ascending Professionals Forum. Being a part of this team has given me a behind-the-scenes look at all the thoughtful planning that goes into ASCLS events—and there’s always something you can help with!

I truly encourage anyone starting in this field to get involved. It may sound cheesy, but I believe it wholeheartedly: one small step for an MLS is one giant leap for all of us.

There were so many great moments and meaningful conversations throughout the conference, but these are just a few highlights that made my time at JAM so special. I had an incredible experience last year and can’t wait to attend JAM this year in Sacramento.

To quote the chair of my MLS program, Dr. Rodney E. Rohde: “Once you go once, you’ll want to come back.” And I couldn’t agree more!
