STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

I believe that heart is the core of our profession. I entered this profession because of my love of science, and I stayed here because of my patients that I have helped and the passion of my coworkers across this country. We know our extensive knowledge and expertise provides necessary results to physicians and ensures that patients are treated in a timely manner. I want our professionals to believe they are so much more than technical experts. We are essential members of the healthcare team, and it is OUR responsibility to effectively communicate this to everyone. Our communication must be clear, truthful, and inclusive for all laboratory professionals. Our members are an intrinsic part of every healthcare organization, and the light that continues to guide people towards a better tomorrow.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Each and everyone’s journey began as a single step, choosing our profession, completing a degree, and performing the duties associated with your career, whether as a bench professional, sales representative, researcher, educator, supervisor, manager, director, phlebotomist, histotechnologist, or other laboratory-related position or title. Although each of us began with that single step, we should be traveling this journey together, including all laboratory professionals and, through interprofessional collaborations, partner organizations and institutions. My vision is to lead ASCLS on a path or journey to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, building a more effective organization for the future. To do so, the Board of Directors and organization must focus on a participatory process to facilitate change. By increasing member participation, it encourages and supports greater organizational memory and ownership of projects and initiatives. It will allow ASCLS to capitalize on the expertise of many, increasing and improving problem solving and planning. This can only be accomplished by having a shared vision and strategy which is key for organizational change!

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I joined ASCLS as a student in 2008. In that time, I have seen first-hand the important role ASCLS exhibits in advocating for the laboratory medicine community. The mission of ASCLS has always been to represent the constituents of the clinical laboratory and to make meaningful and positive impacts in the care of our patients, the communities we serve, as well as in the advancement of our scientific disciplines. Many ASCLS members have played a major role in my own professional development. As a student, bench scientist, educator, and laboratory director, ASCLS has provided me with incredible mentors and countless opportunities to serve.

If elected to serve as a director of ASCLS, it will be my mission to:

  1. Collaborate with the ASCLS Board of Directors to strengthen the voice of ASCLS nationally.
  2. Explore ways to increase visibility of all members of the laboratory medicine community to the broader public and to other members of the healthcare team.
  3. Advocate and share with the board the needs and concerns of the Society membership to the entire ASCLS community and the ASCLS Board of Directors.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Growing up, there was a picture at the top of the stairs of what my family members’ names meant. Every time I raced up the stairs, this picture stared at me, constantly reminding me of what my name proclaimed my destiny to be. Alexandra means “helper and defender of mankind.”

I have helped through numerous volunteer activities, including serving on Wisconsin, Region V, and national ASCLS committees. I have helped by acting as a mentor and Developing Professional/Ascending Professional advisor. Additionally, I have defended the profession through attending and actively participating in five Laboratory Legislative Symposiums, fighting for recognition and legislative action to better the industry.

My namesake may not be a typical philosophy, but the sentiment behind it is something that I strive for in my life and try to instill in others around me. My desire is to continue my work as a helper and defender through participation on the ASCLS Board of Directors. In this role, I hope to “help” bring forth positive change and act as a constructive force for the membership, and I hope to “defend” the career through professional visibility and legislative action.

2018, 2020-2022, Delegate ASCLS House of Delegates

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I have been fortunate to be an active ASCLS member for the last 23 years. I have had the fortune to experience the field from many perspectives starting as an ER phlebotomist, transitioning to an MLT, MT, laboratory supervisor, and then to industry where I have had several roles in sales, marketing, consulting, and business development. I became involved as a student in 2000 and have since then been active on the state, regional, and national levels in various roles. I have watched the Society grow and evolve into what it is today. I have also been involved and lived in four states and three regions.

It would be an honor to continue serving ASCLS on the national level as a member of the Board of Directors (BOD) as a director. At the heart of the laboratorian is the patient-centered focus care we deliver each day. I bring a unique perspective to the BOD as a laboratory and industry professional. I look forward to the opportunity to represent the members of our Society while being an advocate for laboratorians and fighting for a unified voice to improve patient care.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
My life changed when an Army recruiter introduced me to the medical lab years ago. But my passion for the practice and admiration for the dedicated professionals in this field has not waned. I am blessed to have served in military and civilian sectors, on the bench working with dedicated fellow practitioners and in the classroom with future professionals. And I have seen how we all contribute to the combined efforts of the healthcare team and patient’s welfare. But I have also been fortunate to network with others in ASCLS towards the betterment and benefit of our profession. If given the opportunity to serve, I will support activities that:

  • Enhance professional development and collaborative opportunities in current and developing lab practices
  • Promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives that build a culture of belonging within our fields of practice and healthcare systems
  • Increase visibility and advocacy efforts that recognize laboratorians for their critical roles on the healthcare team and as leaders in innovation
  • Communicate career opportunities to recruit professionals and ensure retention to meet the needs of the lab and healthcare partners

I can appreciate the gravitas of this position, and I would welcome an opportunity to work with other members of the Judicial Committee, while protecting the best interests of ASCLS in a discreet and diplomatic manner.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
When I was a student and a new graduate, I did not quite understand the full value of professional membership. I was a working professional for 10 years before someone truly encouraged me to participate and get involved with ASCLS. This was the spark that I needed to inspire my professional growth. The love of learning, collaboration, networking, scholarship, and service are critical pieces for professional development and growth. I have since engaged in several committees and held various positions at the state and regional level. Some of the committees include, but are not limited to, elected positions on the board, PACE coordinator, bylaws chair, and meeting/event planning. I have recently begun to increase my involvement at the national level with participation as a delegate and the DCLS Oversight Committee. Involvement in ASCLS has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Professional investment and mentorship have unlimited value. ASCLS has been a major influence in my career development and has become a substantial piece of my professional identity. As a member of the Nominations Committee, I hope to inspire the same spark in our professionals.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I believe that leadership is both a privilege and an opportunity to serve. These are privileges and opportunities that carry with them responsibilities to inspire and to encourage others to share in the vision and goals of any organization.

To me the single most valuable asset of an organization, such as our own (ASCLS), is its people or members. It will be my responsibility to support their professional development, take an interest in them as individuals, and recognize their goals and accomplishments. So, to do this it will be imperative to identify talents within the organization and its committees.

I also believe that communication will be a key in this position. I will need to maintain a clear communication to members of our organization (ASCLS) so that they are aware of various opportunities to serve within the organization.

My goal for this office will be two-fold. One, to help build awareness of the various positions within the organization. And two, to effectively vet and evaluate members who are interested in assuming these responsibilities within these roles. So, with that being said, I firmly believe that if selected it would be an honor for me to serve on this committee.

I believe that ASCLS as a whole can bring forth the common goal of creating a unified professional organization that supports the needs of its members. I see this role on the Nomination Committee as a way to identify unique talent that can be brought to the forefront. We can all learn from each other, and we should be making space for those with fresh ideas and those who see things differently. We can take from each aspect to build an organization that can be a true representation of the laboratory profession.
