STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY:
One of the most rewarding aspects of any career is the opportunity to serve and advocate for your profession and the individuals it represents; I’ve been honored to serve and be an advocate for the profession and professionals through my tenure on the ASCLS Board of Directors as the Region VI Director for the last six years. Previously, I served as the Region VI Council Secretary for four years and was Chair and Program Facilitator for the 2014-2015 Leadership Academy along with other roles at the national, regional, and state level since joining in 2004. It is these various roles and time on the Board that my leadership has grown, and my belief affirmed that ASCLS not only represents the laboratory professional today, but it’s also the only organization that continues to invest and look to the future needs of the professionals and the profession.

I’d be honored to lead ASCLS at the highest level as I firmly believe that my time on the Board of Directors has provided me with a unique perspective on the investments, forward thinking strategies, and vision identified by the board—all changes done to ensure that ASCLS continues to be the representative voice of all laboratory professionals.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
My world of laboratory science expanded on the first day of graduate school in Medical Technology at the University of Vermont. As the faculty introduced themselves to the students, everyone stressed the importance of professional networking and involvement at all levels. After two years of experience in a county hospital, this was a new world. My first ASMT(ASCLS) Meeting was in 1978, where I focused on interacting with “every professional” and learning from their experiences. I embrace and advocate this philosophy of networking and supporting future and current laboratory professionals today.

I have been fortunate to develop mentors from Vermont, Illinois, North Carolina, Florida, and the national Society. These interactions with laboratory scientists over the past 40+ years has provided me with a unique perspective through experience in community hospitals, large medical centers, diagnostic manufacturers, educational institutions, and EHR.

If given the opportunity to serve as Region III Director, my goals are:

  1. Strengthen the Society through grassroots campaigns with educational and networking opportunities in the current environment.
  2. Promote mentoring, patient advocacy/safety, interdisciplinary and outcome-based initiatives to provide a strong and unified voice in the healthcare community.
  3. Maintain fiscal responsibility of ASCLS while providing quality member services.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I have had the honor of being appointed as Region III Director to the ASCLS Board of Directors for the past nine months, and it has been an outstanding experience. Throughout my short tenure in this position, I have had the joy to learn the ins and outs of the Society, and I am very excited about the direction we are headed. It would be my honor to continue in this position in order to best serve ASCLS by being an innovative and enthusiastic individual who champions Region III. The most important activity for me is communication with the leadership and members of the Region. With ever-evolving technology and methods of communication, I am excited for this major component of the role of Region Director. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, communication will be a major focus as we struggle to have in-person meetings and events. I am committed to assisting the members of my Region with ways to communicate to their constituent societies and to be able to take their questions and concerns back to the Board of Directors. It would be my honor to continue to serve in this position for the upcoming term.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
ASCLS has a diverse group of professionals. I am a champion for our professionals at all levels. Phlebotomists, CLAs, MLTs, MLSs, our advanced practice doctorates, and PhDs all play many roles in our Society. As an all-volunteer Society, we are better when we have participation from all of our constituents, including those with a variety of backgrounds, educational levels, and practice areas. Our vision must be broad enough to support everyone, but our goals small enough for volunteers to advance our Society. Together we will promote the highest standards of practice and ethics, support our scholars and scholarship, and advocate for diversity in thought and background for all of our professionals. We must support our state and regional stakeholders as they bring membership together post-pandemic. State societies and Region III needs membership support, a facilitator that can provide guidance in leadership, and an advocate for logistical support from our national and regional organization. As Region III Director, I will take an active role in assisting our state societies in accomplishing goals important to each state society, foster an environment of leadership development, and help professionals become recognized thought leaders on medical laboratory issues at the state, regional, and national levels.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Perhaps this year, more than most, we recognize the sense of family that is found among friends and colleagues in ASCLS. While my involvement began slowly, the people who provided support and mentoring provided the foundation that led to participation at the national level.

Through ASCLS, not only have I gained from networking and the collegial atmosphere, but I have gained opportunities for professional growth and leadership. From speaking engagements, to working in a team toward collaborative practices, to revitalizing and restructuring committees, to brain-storming and strategic planning, to advocating on Capitol Hill—the list seems endless as to the many benefits I have encountered. These opportunities now spill over into my work and community life.

As an educator, I have the chance—not just a chance, an obligation—to share with my students the benefits of being active in the profession. Just as in the classroom, it is my goal to foster and support identity and advocacy within the medical lab profession.

In the last four years, I have been fortunate to serve on the Board of Directors, and I look forward to being part of continuing the legacy in providing opportunities to other laboratory professionals.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I have always subscribed to the thinking that if you are a member of an organization, you need to contribute. I have been an active member of ASCLS for more than 30 years, participating on state, regional, and national committees. For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Region V Director. The position has allowed me to work with members in Region V and around the country to identify concerns that need to be brought before the board and celebrate successes of individual members and ASCLS as an organization. Going forward, my goals would be to continue the work with state leaders on their various needs and bring their concerns back to the board. In addition, the events in our country this past year have identified that to build a better, stronger organization, we need to be more inclusive and cultivate a diverse leadership on the state, regional, and national levels. Encompassing all viewpoints is important if we are to serve all of our members. I would look forward to working on this and other important issues. It would be an honor to serve a second term as Region V Director.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
The clinical laboratory is a key component in healthcare. From one end of the spectrum to the other, patients and providers rely on accurate information provided by skilled laboratory professionals. These professionals must be recognized through all phases of their professional careers.

As a leader, I aim to perpetuate and amplify the voice of the clinical laboratory professional by representing our constituent societies and all laboratory professionals in making informed and appropriate decisions, speaking up for what is right, and being able to present an unpopular viewpoint to ensure it receives the attention it deserves. I will continue to work diligently to ensure that ASCLS and our profession are recognized as an integral part of healthcare. With the platform we currently have surrounding COVID-19, ASCLS can be the voice and provide a guide into the future aiding laboratory professionals, safeguarding a seat at the decision-making tables in healthcare. I hope to enhance retention of members by ensuring that the top performers are well recognized and are truly thanked for their efforts in research, clinical work, or direct patient care. Additionally, I seek to foster new leaders through professional networking to help aid in the creation of a more unified profession. I want those around me to feel the same passion I experience every day.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Since joining ASCLS as a student in 2008, I have seen the role that ASCLS exhibits in advocating for the entire laboratory medicine community. Whether a student, educator, bench scientist, or laboratory administrator, the mission of ASCLS has been to represent the constituents of the clinical laboratory and to make both a meaningful and positive impact in the care of our patients and communities. And having moved through each of these phases, I know that ASCLS can offer countless benefits and opportunities to everyone involved in the organization.

If elected to serve as Region VI Director, it will be my mission to:

  1. Work with the ASCLS Board of Directors to strengthen the voice of ASCLS nationally.
  2. Represent the needs and concerns of the constituents of Region VI to the broader ASCLS community and the ASCLS Board of Directors.
  3. Explore ways to increase visibility of all members of the laboratory medicine community to the broader public and to other members of the healthcare team.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
For over 40 years, I have served my profession with continuous ASCLS membership and participation since my internship. I have been actively involved in ASCLS at the local, state, regional, and national levels. My leadership roles include: Bylaws Committee chair, Region IV Director, President-Elect, President, Past President, and board liaison to numerous ASCLS committees. These positions of service and leadership have provided in-depth knowledge about the strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats to our organization. An effective leader must be attuned to the needs of the members of the organization, knowledgeable about the documents and governance of the organization and focused on the future direction of the organization. Therefore, I feel imminently qualified and able to serve as a member of the Judicial Committee of ASCLS. The “procedure manual” for the leadership of the organization is based in knowledge of the governance of the organization from our documents. An “understanding” of the issues is based on the opportunity to have worked with constituent societies on the grassroots level, to hear and solve problems, and the implementation and development of programs and projects. I am honored to be considered a candidate for the Judicial Committee.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
It was an honor to be recognized for 35 years of ASCLS membership recently. I have always been proud of what ASCLS accomplishes for our profession and for our members—at the state, regional, and national levels. To be elected to the Judicial Committee, “an impartial body to investigate or deliberate matters referred for its consideration; to test facts against the Bylaws of this Society or against common standards of justice and fair play; and to render opinions as recommendations for action of the Society” has always been an honor for a seasoned member. I am honored to be nominated and would be honored to serve on the committee if elected.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I am honored to be nominated to serve as a member of the Judicial Committee. ASCLS played a significant role in my professional and personal development, and I welcome the opportunity to continue to give back. Forty years of involvement at all levels, including two terms as the Secretary/Treasurer on the ASCLS Board of Directors, have provided me with the experience and expertise to review issues presented to the Judicial Committee from a broader perspective. As a former board member, I participated in reviewing proposed bylaws revisions prior to their approval allowing me to become very familiar with their content which will facilitate their interpretation. It’s imperative that the high standards of ASCLS be upheld by the committee and as such I would consider all aspects of matters, conduct any necessary research, and review information in a fair, unbiased manner before offering my opinions.

Nominations Committee Candidates

The ASCLS Board of Directors recently approved a change to the ASCLS Policies and Procedures to expand the size of the ASCLS Nominations Committee and to transition the term length from three years to two years. In addition, a change was approved to modify the qualifications for Nominations Committee members to remove barriers that artificially limit the numbers of qualified members who might be interested in participating on this critical committee. To that end, we have eight nominees for the six open positions for this committee. Please note: to allow for staggering the term lengths of the added committee member, three positions will be 2-year terms and two positions will be 3-year terms.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I have always been inspired by the influential words of Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” I take these words to heart as a call of action to be an actively engaged participant in driving change. I would like to challenge myself in the same way that I encourage others around me to seek opportunities to positively impact our beloved profession. My philosophy is simple in that I am passionate about diversity of thought and for ensuring that all voices are heard at the table. As a grassroots organization, it is my hope that we seek motivated people with a heart for service and embody the commitment to serve. Representation matters and those appointed to serve on the Nominations Committee have a significant responsibility of ensuring the representation of our professional Society. As for myself, I am an avid believer in fostering relationships and building connections with individuals throughout our communities. I value collaboration, teamwork, and a shared vision in striving towards the same goals. As a member of the Nominations Committee, it is my intention to enhance the voices of our members while supporting the efforts of the committee and ASCLS. Thank you for all that you do.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy is one of inclusion that promotes and supports STEM. Recent worldwide events related to the COVID-19 outbreak have only bolstered the need and recognition for the laboratory science profession. Without dedicated staff and the talent of future laboratory scientists, we cannot hope to overcome future pandemics and crises. We continue to challenge the healthcare industry in recognizing laboratory scientists as not being recognized equally to our healthcare peers, and it’s only through promotion of the medical laboratory science profession within the healthcare establishment and political advocacy that ASCLS facilitates that we can hope to affect change in perception. The framework we lay today in laboratory sciences as a profession creates the foundation for laboratory science of the future; embracing technology and change to the healthcare environment. As a member of the Nominations Committee, my hope is to find the right leaders to guide us into the future.

As a member of the Nominations Committee, I will make every effort to not only recruit our future leaders, but also to cultivate relationships with members that would like to get more involved and mentor them to take on future leadership roles. This is my 24th year as a member of ASCLS, and my longevity with this organization has everything to do with mentorship. It has been with the help of other long-standing members that I gained the confidence and abilities to be a leader in this organization, and my goal now is to pay it forward to other laboratory professionals.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Professional organizations are only one generation away from extinction. If competent, forward-thinking, and energetic members do not step into leadership positions, the organization will fail to meet member needs and will die. ASCLS has been fortunate to have a long tradition of strong leaders, and it is the Nominations Committee’s charge to find the most motivated, insightful, and talented members to step into leadership positions and continue to move ASCLS forward. Having served as the chair of the ASCLS Leadership Academy for a number of years, I feel that I understand the skills needed for leadership in our organization and will apply that knowledge to recruit and encourage our members to serve in leadership positions. As a member of the Nominations Committee, I will strive to provide opportunities for service to all members and match leadership positions with individual strengths, with the best possible outcomes for ASCLS.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
I believe that leadership is both a privilege and an opportunity to serve. These are privileges and opportunities that carries with it responsibilities to inspire and to encourage others to share in the vision and goals of any organization.

To me the single most valuable asset of an organization such as our own (ASCLS) is its people or members. It will be my responsibility to support their professional development, take an interest in them as individuals, and recognize their goals and accomplishments. So, to do this it will be imperative to identify talents within the organization and its committees.

I also believe that communication will be a key in this position. I will need to maintain a clear communication to members of our organization (ASCLS) so that they are aware of various opportunities to serve within the organization.

My goal for this office will be two-fold. One, to help build awareness of the various positions within the organization. And two, to effectively vet and evaluate members that are interested in assuming these responsibilities within these roles. So, with that being said, I firmly believe that if selected it would be an honor for me to serve on this committee.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy as a potential candidate for the Nominations Committee is to work with the committee members to identify applicants who will serve to uphold the vision of ASCLS, to make a responsible decision after gathering facts on applicants, and to evaluate contenders who are able to make a positive impact through their leadership skills. In doing so, I would like to, as part of a team, have selected members who are competent individuals to steer the path forward for ASCLS.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
As a member of the Nominations Committee, I want to further the promotion of the Society by encouraging members to apply for positions within ASCLS. As a young member in the organization, I was scared to apply for higher positions because I did not see people who looked like me. I hope to provide a way for younger members to have easy access to open positions in the organization. I will promote the open positions so that everyone is clear on what is expected of them and they have the necessary information to feel confident enough to step out and apply. I will work with the Region III Director and constituent societies to help identify members that can help to fill any open positions. I feel that this will help with the promotion of not only the organization, but also the profession as a whole.
