Your Voice is Needed to Protect Medical Laboratories and Patient Care
Tell Congress to Address the Chronic Shortage of Medical Laboratory Professionals
This week Rep. Deborah Ross (D-NC) and Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA) introduced their bipartisan legislation, the Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage Relief Act of 2025 (H.R.5444), to establish a federal grant program to increase capacity of the United States to train those with an interest in laboratory science. The grants will also help programs recruit necessary faculty. For the 2023-2024 academic year, thousands of applicants to MLS and MLT programs were unable to enroll because of limited capacity in many programs.
Tell Congress to Pass the RESULTS Act (S.2761/H.R.5269).

Fallout from a cut of 15 percent on the 800 highest volume diagnostic tests would likely mean:
- Layoffs and laboratory closures
- Pay freezes for medical laboratory professionals
- Laboratories unwilling to continue as clinical sites for education programs.
The RESULTS Act would:
- Reform the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) by dramatically improving the data used to set rates on the CLFS.
- Reduce the administrative burden of data collection and reporting for laboratories and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
- Provide stability to the CLFS through improved rate setting and mitigation of steep year-to-year rate reductions.
Take Action Twice
Your experience is invaluable for members of Congress, and they want to understand your perspective. Describe what a massive cut to laboratory revenue would mean to your patients who are their voters. What would fewer available tests, delayed results, and loss of access mean to their health?
- Respond to the Labvocate Action Alert to contact Congress about the Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage Relief Act of 2025.
- Visit stoplabcuts.org and use the take action form, then email and follow up by phone until you talk with the healthcare staffer on your Representative’s and Senators’ staff. Remember that everyone has one Representative and two Senators to contact.
ASCLS Joins Coalition Urging ACIP to Use Evidence in Vaccine Standards
This week ASCLS joined the Alliance for Aging Research and 75 other associations to urge the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to use evidence based standards in its process of examining vaccines standards in the United States. This letter was sent to the members of ACIP this morning as they begin their second day of deliberations regarding national vaccine policy.
We have signed on to this letter to uphold two major components of the ASCLS Advocacy Agenda:
- ASCLS will oppose unnecessary regulatory hurdles limiting access to care that are not based on science or the best interest of patients.
- ASCLS will oppose efforts to weaken vaccination standards via the regulatory or sub regulatory process.
ASCLS Reestablishes Lambda Tau Honor Society

The purpose of Lamda Tau is to:
- develop a spirit of cooperation and unity among the students entering any of the fields encompassed by medical laboratory science
- stimulate a higher ideal for scholastic effort, encourage research, and help develop the professional character of the work itself
- interest other students in these fields; determine and make known the requirements of hospitals and other institutions offering approved education
- become better acquainted with medical biology and the workers in these fields in order to receive the benefit of mutual discussions and associations with fellows of common interests.

Webinar – When Normal Isn’t Universal: Disparities in ANC Reference Intervals
Absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is a cornerstone parameter in clinical decision-making, yet conventional reference ranges were developed in populations that do not reflect global genetic diversity. Individuals with the Duffy null phenotype, common among people of African ancestry, often present with lower circulating ANC despite normal immune competence, leading to inappropriate chemotherapy holds, drug discontinuation, or clinical exclusion. This session will review the evidence for Duffy null–specific ANC reference ranges and highlight the laboratory’s critical role in validating, implementing, and communicating these more equitable standards.
Presenter: Daniel C. Dees, DCLS, CC(NRCC), MLS(ASCP)CM, Medical Director of Clinical Hematology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Instructor in Pathology at Harvard Medical School
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how absolute neutrophil count (ANC) reference ranges were historically developed and why they vary across populations.
- Explain the role of the Duffy null phenotype in producing lower circulating ANC values and its clinical implications.
- Identify laboratory-based strategies for validating and implementing phenotype-specific ANC reference ranges to reduce health care disparities.
Instruction Level: Intermediate
Registration:
This P.A.C.E.®-accredited webinar is free for ASCLS members ($10 for non-members). Preregistration is required. If you can’t attend live, register anyway—those who pre-register will receive access to the webinar recordings.
