ASCLS Submits Comments and Recommendations on the Standard Occupational Classification

The Bureau of Labor Statistics opened a comment period in June with a deadline of August 12 for comment on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). The ASCLS Board of Directors supports the standardization of nomenclature within the laboratory profession. ASCLS President Pat Tille signed a letter supporting our recommendations that addressed the SOC-Updates for 2028 (BLS-2024-0001), which was submitted August 12. The following is an excerpt from the letter.

“The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, on behalf of its members and other stakeholders drawn from a broad representation of the clinical laboratory community, is writing to request that that the Standard Occupation Classification Policy Committee (SOCPC) make the following changes to the Standard Occupational Classification in 2028, clarifying how medical laboratory professionals should be accurately coded.

“Our recommendations are consistent with the intent of the SOC, which is ‘designed to reflect the current occupational composition of the United States …’ Updating these titles is necessary to bring about accurate, recognized and unified nomenclature, which is critical to improving the professional visibility and recruitment efforts of these essential healthcare professionals, while improving data collection for these occupations.” Read more.

2024 Labvocate Symposium Early Bird Discount Ends August 29

Laboratory Legislative Symposium ASCLS Kansas Tennessee at CapitolSeptember 30-October 1 | Alexandria, Virginia, or Virtual

The annual Labvocate Symposium (formerly called the Laboratory Legislative Symposium) gives you the chance to come together with medical laboratory professionals from six laboratory organizations and make our concerns known inside Congress.

Designed for advocacy neophytes to experts, the Symposium will provide information on the Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA) and how it would address the negative impacts of PAMA; proposed legislation to support the medical laboratory workforce; and the basics of how a bill becomes a law.

Attendees are also coached on presentation techniques so you can effectively talk to your congressional representatives and their staff. You will come away from the two-day event with first-hand knowledge of the political system in action and confidence that you can make a difference.

New this year, all ASCLS Developing Professional members can attend Labvocate 2024 virtually for free.

This year’s event will be held September 30-October 1 at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town in Alexandria, Virginia. In-person and virtual attendee options are available. Sign up by August 29 and save with the Early Bird discount.

Support Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA)

Tell Congress to Pass the Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA)ASCLS is proud to be part of the Stop Lab Cuts campaign in support of the Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA), which would prevent an up to 15 percent payment cut to laboratory tests, protect patient access to laboratory services, and ensure a robust health care infrastructure.

SALSA is bipartisan, bicameral legislation that would simplify the data reporting process by providing the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) with the authority to collect data from a statistical sampling of all major types of laboratories that provide services to seniors, including independent, hospital, and physician office laboratories. This would achieve accurate and sustainable Medicare rates for laboratory services, ensuring a strong clinical laboratory infrastructure to protect public health and innovation in tomorrow’s diagnostics.

Here’s how you can support the SALSA:

  1. Take two minutes to visit StopLabCuts.org and Take Action to let your member of Congress know that protecting access to clinical laboratory services is important to you.
  2. Share your support for SALSA on social media using these sample graphics.
  3. Attend the 2024 Labvocate Symposium, September 30-October 1, for in-depth information about SALSA and PAMA, as well as coaching on how to speak with legislators about the importance of passing SALSA.

The “Ready? Set? Test!” free resources equip testing personnel with the basic training they need to perform waived patient testing safely and accurately and ensure reliable, high-quality test results. This event will highlight the “Ready? Set? Test!” resources and waived testing best practices for professionals and volunteers who perform or coordinate waived testing at non-traditional sites or settings (e.g., nursing homes, clinics, and jails).

Connect: The Community Conversations

ASCLS Connect is an invaluable platform to ask questions, share feedback, and stay connected with your community of laboratorians. Here are some of the recent discussions you may have missed.

The Membership Committee posts “Membership Mondays” questions each week to spur discussion and get to know fellow ASCLS members. Recent questions were:

In the Immunology/Immunohematology Scientific Assembly, members shared advice on SBB or a transfusion masters degree programs.

In the Hematology/Hemostasis Scientific Assembly, a member collected information about bronchial alveolar lavage (bal), and another received recommendations for hematology textbooks.

In the Clinical Laboratory Educators Forum, members answered questions regarding California CLS licensure for out of state students.

In the Open Forum, members discussed the Bureau of Labor Statistics opened a comment period for comment on the Standard Occupational Classification and how to respond before the August 12 deadline.

Also in the Open Forum, a member started a “Hot Topic Tuesday” discussion on Utilization of AI in Diagnostic Laboratory Testing.

Members also congratulated member Darby Naheedy, who earned the CAP Distinguished Medical Student Award, and ASCLS Director Ali Nussbaum, who was named recipient of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
