ASCLS Leads Congressional Briefing to Address Laboratory Workforce Shortage
ASCLS held a Congressional staff briefing in the U.S. Capitol on June 3, working to secure more cosponsors for HR 5444, the Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage Act.
ASCLS President Kyle Riding and President-Elect Stacey Robinson met with 15 House staffers, which included key House committees. They also met with Senator Maggie Hassan’s (D-NH) staff as well as staff for the House Energy & Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction on the bill.
The bill would provide resources to expand the clinical laboratory workforce through a targeted grant program for education programs and add medical laboratory professionals to the National Medical Services Corp, which would qualify them for loan forgiveness and direct that research determine where shortage areas exists in the United States. The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Deborah Ross (D-NC) and Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA).
