Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) Case Studies: Effective Resistance Detection and Reporting

P.A.C.E.® - approved for 1 contact hour

DESCRIPTION: AST and reporting is becoming ever more complex as resistance continues to increase. Clinical laboratories struggle with testing appropriate drugs and reporting results that are meaningful and not misleading.  This program will use case studies to highlight the most clinically significant types of resistance encountered today, methods for accurate detection and options for results reporting.  The goal is to ensure the laboratory's efforts in AST to optimally support prudent prescribing of antimicrobial agents and infection control strategies for multidrug-resistant bacteria.

SPEAKER: Janet Hindler, MCLS, MT(ASCP), Sr. Specialist, Clinical Microbiology, UCLA Healthcare, Los Angeles, CA

AUDIENCE: This intermediate-level program is appropriate for laboratory professionals working in clinical, public health and academic settings.

P.A.C.E.® credit available through October 17, 2014 via the archived session!  Register now for $25/person!  See registration information below.

 2014 Archived Fall Webinars

Live date:  September 18, 2014

E Pluribus Unum in the Laboratory:

Thyroid Testing as an Example

P.A.C.E.® - approved for 1 contact hour

DESCRIPTION:  Ideally, clinical laboratory results should be equivalent, regardless of where or how they are produced. This is important for individual patients, who may visit different healthcare systems during the course of their treatment. But it is also vital to the success of clinical practice guidelines that utilize laboratory test results to identify patients and to determine their management. There are two approaches to this goal, standardization and harmonization, depending on whether or not a "gold standard" reference measurement procedure is available. These approaches will be illustrated, using free T4 and thyrotropin (TSH) as examples.

SPEAKER:  James D. Faix, MD, Medical Director of Chemistry & Immunology, Stanford University Medical Center, Palo Alto, CA

AUDIENCE: This intermediate-level program is appropriate for laboratory professionals working in clinical, public health and academic settings.
